We Are Always Tender WIth Our Dead
By Eric LaRocca
SEPTEMBER 2025

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Rupert Cromwell has been a bitter young man since the death of his mother. Gladys Esherwood is an unhappy wife to a cruel man. These two unlikely companions share something in common: they feel trapped in a place where they don’t belong, and they long to leave Burnt Sparrow.

The town of Burnt Sparrow, New Hampshire is home to many ghosts, including a shuttered paper factory and, most recently, victims of a Christmas Day massacre that litter the streets.

This dark, bizarre, nightmarish story explores queerness, sexuality and selfhood as well as dark secrets and hot shame. Uncomfortable yet mesmerizing, this story forces readers to contend with the very threshold of their limits.
