In the small town of Peaches, not far from Fresno, California, sits The Gifts of the Spirit Church, where Jesus Christ is worshipped second only to their Pastor Vern, and the believers are rained down upon by God’s golden glitter.

After her mother abruptly leaves the GOTS Church, Lacey moves in with her Grandma Cherry, an eccentric old firecracker of a woman who smokes fruit-flavored cigarettes, drives a purple hearse, and walks with a bull penis cane. Meanwhile, Lacey waits in zealous anticipation for her first blood and the bestowment of her blessed Assignment from the cult.

Fair warning, despite the often whimsically peculiar details, this one is dark. Some of the content is truly harrowing, but it packs so much heart with a wicked sense of humor that it somehow manages to be uplifting all the same. The prose is mesmerizing with a pop of color that makes visualizing the story a natural treat.

If this book gets adapted into film (and I sincerely hope it does), I picture it being directed by Ari Aster or Darren Aronofsky. In short, I absolutely loved this book.
