Interview with the Vampire
By Anne Rice
APRIL 1976

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This gothic classic tells the story of Louis, a French vampire brought up in New Orleans, who grapples with existential questions of faith, philosophy, and ethics.

Louis finds himself entrenched in a toxic and codependent relationship with Lestat, his master, a manipulative and withholding vampire keeping Louis captive with the notion that he knows more secrets of his newfound existence as a vampire.

While I appreciate this text for what it was, revolutionary in the queer community in its time, I must admit that I found the text rather tedious. The story is interesting, but the prose is droning, meandering, and often quite boring. I don’t think I could recommend this text beyond its undeniable historical and cultural significance.
