THE LOVELY BONES
By Alice Sebold
JULY 2002

Rating: 3 out of 5.

At the young age of fourteen, in a cornfield behind her school, Susie Salmon was murdered. From her version of Heaven, she watched as the lives of her loved ones unfolded. She watched how her absence shaped their lives, she watched as her friends and siblings grew to ages she would never know, and she watched her murderer slip between the cracks of the law.

I enjoyed most of this story. As always, I’ll skip the spoilers, but I will say what bothered me. While I found the concept fascinating, a murder story told in the voice of the victim, the last act dragged out in a way that tainted the rest of the novel for me. Certainly worth a read, but not something I would plan to revisit.
