Rating: 4 out of 5.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a black comedy for the exhausted modern woman: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas meets American Psycho, drenched in a pool of despondent lethargy then stuffed into a Bloomingdale’s “little brown bag”.

Our unnamed protagonist, drained by grief and depression, sets off on a mission to hibernate for a full year. In her quest for oblivion, despite an arsenal of strong prescription drugs provided by a quirky and delusional psychiatrist, our narrator wakes sporadically to evidence of a life lived unconsciously, or the grating irritant of her supposed best friend paying an unexpected visit.

Both brazenly irreverent and oddly sympathetic, the playful paradoxes in this novel showcase Ottessa Moshfegh’s masterful command on her readers’ hearts and imagination.
